We are excited this year to be using a new reading and writing curriculum created by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt called Journeys. Our reading, writing, spelling, and vocabulary will all be connected and aligned with Common Core Standards. Each week we will be doing a different lesson that students will record in the homework folder.
Click on the journeys picture below to access our focus wall page. Then click on the current week's lesson and it will give you our strategy focus, story we are working on, and spelling list.
The green portions of the map are where I'm listing the resources I plan on using to teach each skill. I'm doing this mainly because I start to forget all of the wonderful things I've downloaded and purchased from other teachers! Although, as I was working on this yesterday, I felt that this was the most overwhelming part! My plan is to leave plenty of space is those boxes and to hand-write some of the resources in as the year progresses and then type them in the file next summer. That way I hopefully have a nice reference for the following year! We'll see how it goes. This is my first time making a curriculum map.:).

The most common complaint from teachers at my school is the access to the online resources. Although it has a variety of great resources, the site often crashes.
The teachers struggle to access the online resources that they want to use. One day an online resource will work, and then when you go to use the resource with your students the resource won't load. In addition, you need to purchase some of the online resources in addition to the bundle your school purchased. If you want the online leveled-readers, you need to pay an additional fee.
These hidden fees are a frustration to our teachers and administration. Online Component Rating: 1. My absolute favorite part about Journeys is their level-readers and level reading group lesson plans:). Like many other series there is an ELL, Above Level, Below Level, and On Level tier. However, what sets this series apart from others is its connections between the levels.
For each topic ALL leveled readers (ELL, AL, BL, and OL) have the SAME reading strategy, reading skill, sight words, genre, and coincide with the essential question for the week. We were so thrilled to find a series that meets the Common Core State standards for all of our learners.
Journeys comes with many additional resources to help teacher differentiate in their classroom. Differentiation Rating: 5. Ohlfsk, I teach a mini-lesson that I pull from teacher's manual. This usually lasts 15-20 minutes.
Our school uses the Daily Five model so after our mini-lesson the children have a hands-on activity from one of our Daily Five choices:). I have a unique situation where I teach phonics/phonemic awareness and my co-teacher teaches comprehension and text analysis. So I teach 1/2 of our kindergarten students for 45 minutes at a time, and she takes the other half and then we switch. This makes up our 90 minute reading block. Hi,Miss Megan.
Thank you for your kindness.I want to use Journeys to teach Chinese kids. But since we are just an after-school learning center, so we are not able to give out so many lessons every week.
We only have 3-4h per week t0 teach the kids. After searching these books, I find out that they have so many excellent materials, but I just don't know where to start. However, I do know that we want to help them to learn phonics first, because we will set up a reading program. Chinese students learn English words by reciting the vocabulary, so phonics can be good for them.

The Materials Adaptation Project brought teams of educators together to design easy-to-implement changes to improve the standards alignment of Journeys 2014. These recommendations help Journeys users improve the effectiveness of their basal by setting aside less effective portions of the basal and devoting more attention to high-value texts and activities. These guidance documents are available for districts to use in planning and professional development settings as they work to align their instruction to college and career ready standards.
Student Achievement Partners worked with districts across the country who appreciate the promise and potential of the Journeys comprehensive reading program from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and who sought to align Journeys more closely to the expectations of rigorous college and career-ready standards. Student Achievement Parteners worked in a productive partnership with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and teams of teachers from these districts to create supplemental materials that leverage the program's strongest elements, which when used alongside Journeys, provides teachers the resources to deliver aligned instruction in order to drive student outcomes.
Journeys Decodable Reader Resources Decodable Readers are a valuable resource connected to systematic phonics instruction. In Journeys, decodable readers connect directly to the scope and sequence for phonics sound and spelling patterns as well as the teaching of high frequency words. Each week, students are given the opportunity to read texts that build on and use the newly taught sounds. Student Achievement Partners has created a protocol designed to enhance the use of decodable readers. By adding a sequence of multiple reads, comprehension questions, and foundational skills tasks and games, teachers are able to make better use of these resources. The Journeys Decodable Reader Resources for kindergarten and grade one are text specific versions of this protocol. There is a template for two texts per week for five units of kindergarten and first grade.
Each template can be used for multiple reads, allowing teachers supportive guidance in enhancing this valuable resources. Texts included with the program that do not have resources provided can be used for extra support, buddy reading, or student independent reading in order to build reading fluency. Guidance Documents.
